Snowy New Year in Japan: What to Expect
On the 28th, the Kagoshima Meteorological Observatory spotted the first snowfall of the season in Sakurajima, Kagoshima City! This snowfall came 10 days later than usual and 7 days later than last season. The chilly winter air is moving into the area because of a weather pattern that has high pressure in the west and low pressure in the east. Dec 27: Snowfall is heavy in Hokkaido, Northeast Japan Sea side, and Hokuriku region. Niigata Mountains got 70 cm of snow, Toyama Mountains got 60 cm, and Hakkoda Mountain in Aomori Prefecture got 295 cm.Dec 28-29: Cold air will spread across Japan. Heavy snow is expected along the Sea of Japan coasts of Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku, and Northern Kanto. Western Japan's mountains will also see snow.
Dec 31 (New Year's Eve): Severe weather and heavy snow are likely in northern Japan. Daytime temperatures will be warmer than usual. Tokyo might reach 16°C but will get colder by evening.
Jan 1 (New Year's Day): The sun will shine on the Pacific side, perfect for seeing the first sunrise of the year. However, temperatures in Tokyo and other places will drop. Keep warm during the New Year.
