As of 9 AM on September 30th, Typhoon No. 17, named "Jebi" (제비), is moving north-southwest near Chichijima in the Ogasawara Islands. It is anticipated to approach Chichijima and Hahajima around noon, bringing rough weather conditions to the area. Following this, Jebi is expected to shift slightly eastward and continue north, potentially reaching the Kanto coast by tomorrow, October 1st. The typhoon was named "Jebi," which means swallow in Korean, as proposed by South Korea[1][2][5]. Heavy rainfall of up to 150 millimeters and winds reaching 108 kilometers per hour are forecasted, prompting warnings for severe weather impacts in eastern Japan.

Autumn Foliage Highlights

As autumn unfolds in Japan, Hokkaido and Northeast Region are poised to showcase its stunning foliage. This year, the vibrant transformation of leaves has already begun, signaling the arrival of a picturesque season across the region.

The autumn foliage in Hokkaido is beginning to show vibrant colors as of September 30, 2024. Key spots like Akaiwa Seigan Canyon, Jozankei, and Lake Shikotsu are all starting to change, with temperatures dropping below 10°C contributing to this transformation. The best viewing period for red leaves is expected to peak from early October, with various locations like Daisetsu Kogen Onsen and Hokkaido Natural Park Shumarinai Lake already displaying early signs of color change. For those planning a visit, mid October to late October will offer the most spectacular views across the region.

The best time to visit Northeast Japan for autumn foliage is currently underway, with many scenic spots beginning to display vibrant colors. As of September 30, 2024, areas in Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, and Yamagata Prefectures are witnessing early changes. Notable locations include Jogakura Stream and Hakkoda in Aomori, both starting to change color, as well as Hiraniwa Plateau and Kakkonda Valley in Iwate, which are also showing signs of transformation. In Yamagata, Otaki Park and Gassan are beginning to shift to autumn hues. This year's foliage is expected to peak later than usual due to warmer temperatures, with optimal viewing from mid October to late November across various elevations in the region.

The 53rd Kamifurano Tokachidake Autumn Foliage Festival will take place in early October, showcasing the vibrant autumn colors of Hokkaido. This festival highlights the stunning foliage around Tokachidake, one of Japan's earliest locations for autumn leaves. Key events occur at Miharashi Park and Tokachidake Onsen, featuring a Furano Autumn Taste Market with local delicacies.
